Screen Roofers, Workers and Everyone Else
Summer is here, and roofers offering their work within city limits must obtain a solicitor/canvasser license and receive a permit from the city. City officials insist that people ask roofing solicitors for legitimate licenses and permits up-front before contracting them to work on their roof. A license provides some basic contact information for the company, in case you need to find it later, even though it doesn't guarantee someone has done a background check. Anyone without a license and/or a permit must be reported and pay a hefty fee.
So the city wants to collect the fee, but it doesn't even guarantee a background check for it? So, anyone who can afford to pay the fee can get all the necessary licenses and permits, and go around robbing people's homes.
When a prospective roofer comes to the door, ask for his business card, or some form of company owner's information, or even simply write down his name. Tell him to come check with you later. You can use this infromation to conduct a background check. With this you can feel better about the decission to let this person work on your roof or walking away from your house.
